Umm Al Quwain — UAQ for short — is the second-smallest of the seven emirates and the quietest. Its 750 square kilometres run along the Gulf coast between Ajman to the south and Ras Al Khaimah to the north, and most of its population lives in or around UAQ city, the headland that juts out into the sea between the Khor Al Beidah lagoon and the open Gulf. The emirate is almost entirely undeveloped along its long, flat sand beach — and you can drive the corniche from Ajman to RAK without ever feeling crowded.

Khor Al Beidah, the mangrove-and-lagoon system on the southern edge of UAQ city, is one of the country's better-kept natural secrets — kayaking, birdwatching, traditional dhow yards, and a flamingo population that grows through the winter months. Dreamland Aqua Park, just inland on the road back toward Sharjah, has been a regional fixture since the 1990s. Other than that, UAQ is a place people live, not a place they tour through, and the homes there reflect that — long beachfront plots, generous family villas, and remarkably little high-rise.
