How to Keep Your Living Room Cool and Calm All Summer

When the temperature climbs outside, the living room becomes the room everyone retreats to. A few thoughtful changes can make it feel noticeably cooler, calmer and lighter for the season — without redecorating from scratch.

Start with a lighter palette

Deep, saturated colours hold visual weight and can make a room feel warmer than it is. For summer, lean into creams, ivories, soft camels and pale taupes. They reflect daylight, open the space up and give everything a fresh, airy feel. Save your richer tones for a few cushions or a single accent piece so the room still has depth.

Choose fabrics that breathe

The fabric you sit on makes a real difference in the heat. Relaxed, open weaves and soft textures feel cooler against the skin than dense, heavy ones. Cream bouclé and linen-look weaves are lovely for summer — they read light and casual, and they wear beautifully day to day. If your sofa lives in a bright room, a performance weave will hold its colour against strong daylight far better than a delicate one.

Rethink the layout for airflow

Cool rooms feel cool partly because they feel uncluttered. Pull seating slightly away from the walls, keep clear sightlines to your windows, and avoid blocking the path the air-conditioning takes across the room. A little breathing space around each piece instantly makes a space feel calmer and less heavy.

Layer textures, not heat

You don't have to give up cosiness for summer — just lighten the layers. Swap a chunky winter throw for a fine cotton or a soft, loosely woven one. Mix a few different textures (a smooth velvet cushion against a nubby bouclé, say) so the room still feels considered, without piling on warmth.

Let the light do the work

Sheer drapes are the summer hero. They soften harsh midday sun, keep the worst of the heat at bay and fill the room with a gentle, diffused glow rather than a glare. Pair them with a heavier curtain you can draw at the hottest part of the afternoon if you need to.

Finish with calm, natural touches

A single sage olive branch in a ceramic vase, a stack of books, a simple stone tray — small natural details cool a room down visually and keep it feeling relaxed rather than busy. Less, arranged well, almost always feels fresher than more.
