Modular beats fixed-frame.

Children spill, draw, climb, and occasionally vomit. The single best feature in a family sofa is that any one module can be re-upholstered separately. A fixed-frame 3-seater that gets damaged in one spot has to be either tolerated, slip-covered, or fully re-upholstered. Chenille is the family workhorse.

Chenille wipes. Crayons come off chenille with a damp cloth and a slow hand. Most water-based spills don't penetrate. Yoghurt blots out. The same cannot be said for bouclé or smooth velvet. Avoid pale solid colours in seat cushions.

Cream looks beautiful in the showroom and lasts about three months in a real family room. Choose mid-tone neutrals: warm grey, taupe, dark beige. The room still reads light and modern. The fabric reads "lived in" not "stained."

Stain-resist treatment: worth it for families.

Most of our fabric library is available with a stain-resistant treatment. It's the difference between a juice spill being a panic and a juice spill being a wipe. For families, we recommend it on every cushion piece. Cost is modest. Saved-fabric-replacement is substantial.

Coffee table choice matters as much as the sofa.

Glass coffee tables and small children are a documented disaster. Stone is heavy and edge-sharp. The right family coffee table is upholstered (a soft ottoman) or solid wood with rounded edges — large enough to be obvious, low enough to not bruise foreheads. We've stopped recommending glass entirely for under-eight households.

Floor seating: the underrated solution.

Many of the bigger family rooms in Dubai Hills and Emirates Hills work brilliantly with a large floor cushion or oversized pouf alongside the main sofa. Kids gravitate to floor seating. It saves the main sofa from being the trampoline. Add a washable rug underneath and the room handles three children plus their friends without strain.

The honest depth question.
