Almost every customer who buys a dining table later wishes they'd gone slightly smaller. We've delivered enough oversized tables into Dubai Marina and JBR apartments to have a strong opinion: buy for how you actually live, not for the dinner party you hosted twice in five years.
The rule of thumb that actually works.
Per seated person, you need:
- 60 cm of table width (place setting + elbow room).
- 30 cm of table depth if eating across (so the table needs to be 90 cm deep minimum).
- 90 cm of floor space behind the chair to pull it out and stand.
That last one is the killer. A 240 cm dining table needs a room that's at least 4.2 m on the short side once you account for chairs being pulled back. Most apartment dining areas are 3.5–3.8 m.
How many people do you actually seat?
Walk through the last year. How many dinners did you actually host with eight people? Most apartment dwellers in Business Bay and DIFC seat four most of the time and six on the high end. A 180 cm rectangular table or a 130 cm round table covers both perfectly — and leaves your living room breathing room.
Round vs rectangle.
For tighter spaces, round wins. There's no corner to bump into. Conversation flows because everyone can see everyone. A 130 cm round seats four comfortably, six in a pinch. A 150 cm round seats six comfortably. Above 150 cm, rounds get hard to source.
For larger spaces or rectangular rooms — common in Arabian Ranches and The Springs — rectangles use space better. A 200×100 cm seats six. A 240×100 cm seats eight. Always pair with chairs that tuck in fully under the table.
Extendable tables: read the fine print.
An extendable table sounds like the obvious solution. In practice, most people extend their table twice a year and live with the awkward seam line every other day. The hardware also limits the table's structural feel — you'll see thinner aprons and lighter timber. Unless you actively host monthly, buy for everyday use.
Chair choice changes the whole room.
Heavy upholstered dining chairs in a Palm Jumeirah villa can look right. The same chairs in a Dubai Marina apartment crowd the room. As an apartment guideline: pick chairs with visible legs, slim backs, and an open structure. Bulky tub chairs eat visual space even when not in use.
Final apartment-friendly setup.
- Studio / 1-bed (3–3.5 m short side): 110 cm round, 4 chairs.
- 2-bed (3.5–4 m short side): 130–140 cm round OR 160×90 cm rectangle, 4 chairs.
- 3-bed (4+ m short side): 180×90 cm rectangle, 6 chairs.
- Open-plan villa: 200–240 cm rectangle, 6–8 chairs.
